We all know them, varicose veins- those that appear visible mostly on the legs and feet, identifiable by their snaky shape and their purple or blue color. Varicose veins can occur for various reasons, one of them being excess weight. Here’s a closer look at how being overweight can lead to the development of varicose veins and what can be done to manage or prevent them!
How Excess Weight Can Cause Varicose Veins
The veins have valves which help blood flow one way or the other. Carrying excess weight can strain your veins, affecting blood circulation and potentially harming the small valves that assist in maintaining blood flow. With the increased pressure, the valves can break and become weak. When this occurs, blood can accumulate in the veins. In addition, Varicose Veins usually impact the veins on the surface. However with severe cases, blood cots can develop in deeper veins which is related to deep vain thrombosis.
How To Prevent Varicose Veins Due To Excess Weight
Exercise: Many believe that to exercise properly one must follow intense workout routines and visit the gym nearly every day. However research shows that even an exercise such as walking can be quite effective. Walking can even have amazing benefits such as lowering the risk of diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
