Sclerotherapy is primarily used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of spider veins, which are small, thin veins that are close to the skin’s surface and often appear as red, blue, or purple clusters. It can also be used to alleviate symptoms associated with varicose veins, which are larger veins that are swollen, twisted, and usually protrude from the skin.

Varicose veins can be a troublesome and sometimes painful condition that affects countless individuals. If you’re one of the many people dealing with the discomfort and unsightly appearance of varicose veins, you may have come across a procedure called sclerotherapy.

How Sclerotherapy Works

It is a non-surgical procedure, which is typically performed on at our office and does not require anesthesia.

The sclerosant solution is injected using a very fine needle directly into the targeted veins.

The number of injections required depends on the extent and size of the veins being treated.

This solution causes the vein walls to swell, stick together, and eventually collapse. Over time, the collapsed veins are reabsorbed by the body, resulting in improved blood flow and the fading or disappearance of the veins.

Side Effects Related to the Procedure

When sclerotherapy is carried out by a skilled practitioner, serious medical consequences are incredibly rare.

While sclerotherapy is generally safe and effective, some potential side effects and complications may include temporary skin discoloration, swelling, itching, or mild pain at the injection site. In rare cases, more serious complications, such as blood clots or allergic reactions to the sclerosant, can occur.

After Your Sclerotherapy Treatment

Following the procedure, the patient may be advised to wear compression stockings or bandages to help with healing and provide support to the treated veins.

You can resume your daily activities immediately after the procedure!
